Marion- John C. McCabe, 85, of Marion, died at 4:40 AM, Thursday, May 13, 2004 at the Marion Veterans Administration Hospital. Mr. McCabe was born on June 7, 1918 in Stonefort to James & Mary (Van Dyke) McCabe. He married his wife of fifty-six years, Thelma L. Mounce, on June 21, 1947 in Marion. She survives of Marion. John was a WWII Army Veteran. He stormed Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion and received the Purple Heart for injuries he received as a result of artillery fire. He retired as a self-employed truck driver. He owned McCabes Trucking and remained active as a life member of Marion VFW Post #1301 and post commander of the DAV for twenty-three years. He was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church and the Pulleys Round Table. SURVIVORS: Wife- Thelma L. McCabe- Marion Daughter & son in law- Deanna & Dennis Loomer- Louisville, KY Daughter & son in law- Nancy & Mike Benton- Marion Three Grandchildren: Sara A. Loomer- Louisville, KY Jennifer L. Benton- Evansville, IN Leslie N. Benton- Marion Brother- James Vincent McCabe- Creal Springs Brother- Allan McCabe- Creal Springs Sister- Daisy McCabe- Creal Springs He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers; Vincent, Clarence & Francis McCabe. The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, May 15, 2004 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Marion. Father Richard Mohr will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. The Marion VFW Post #1301 will perform military rites at the graveside. Visitation will be from 8:30 AM until time of procession, Saturday, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion.
