Herrin-Joseph Paul (Joe) Childers, 90, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at home following a brief illness. The son of the late Monroe & Mattie Crain Childers, Joe was born on December 3, 1914 in Herrin, IL. He was the beloved husband of Velma Johnson Childers, whom he married on July 6, 1966 in Herrin. Following service in the Army during WW II, which he was a Veteran, Joe went to work for Norge, and retired after 39 years. Joe is survived by: Loving Wife: Velma Sisters-in-laws: Virginia Johnson, Rose Robinson & Genevieve Carney of Carterville Betty Albertsen & husband Al of Carson City, NV. Brother-in-law: Charles E. Johnson of Winston-Salem, NC. Many nieces & nephews, including Jim Johnson of Carterville Debra Johnson of Framingham, MA. Joes life was enriched by special neighbors Mr. and Mrs. Charles Green, Mr & Mrs. Frank Engram, and Mr. Earl Childers-all of Herrin Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 11, 2005 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Harlow officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Herrin American Legion & VFW Posts. Visitation will be 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Memorial envelopes are available at the funeral home.
