Lela E. Greathouse

Hurst- LELA ESTHER GREATHOUSE, age 82, of Hurst, passed away at 5:30am on Monday, January 8, 2007 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Home in Herrin. Lela was born in Clifford, IL (Blairsville Township) on March 19, 1924 to Jacob and Rosa Etta (Howard) Whitecotton. She married Edward Dale Greathouse on December 31, 1938 in Jackson, MO and together they shared almost 50 years of marriage until his death on October 15, 1988. Mrs. Greathouse was a homemaker. She enjoyed baking and spending time with her grandchildren. Lela was a member of the First Christian Church in Hurst. Survivors include- two sons: Gary and Betty Greathouse of Carterville, IL; David Greathouse of Pittsburg, IL; one daughter- Lois and Robert Cremeens of Carterville, IL; twelve grandchildren- Eddie Greathouse, Madlyn Rowland, Donald Greathouse, Patricia Campbell, Marsha Russell, Robert Greathouse, Steven Greathouse, Kathy Robinson, Leann Harner, Kristin Laitala, Julie Keith, and Amy Rebman; 26 great grandchildren; 17 great great grandchildren; four sisters- Dorothy Brandon, Parilee and Bill Deaton, Phyllis and Joe McSpadden, Rosalie and Arnold Nadler; one brother- Jacob and Doris Whitecotton; two sisters-in-law- Alta Emery and Eileen and Herbert Diekhans. Mrs. Greathouse was preceded in death by fifteen brothers and sisters, her parents and husband, and one infant son- Paul Edward Greathouse. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Greg Parker officiating. Burial will follow in McKinney Hill Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be held from 11-1pm on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or Shawnee Christian Nursing Home. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
