Herrin- Lela Ivern Smith, age 80, of Herrin, passed away at 10:55am on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at Herrin Hospital.
Lela was born in Carbondale on April 24, 1936, the daughter of Ira and Ruby (Laffoon) Batson. She married A. Arlie Smith in Carbondale at the First Baptist Church on June 28, 1953. He preceded her in death on November 18, 2004.
Mrs. Smith had retired from Herrin Hospital as an operating room technician after more than thirty years of service. Lela was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her beloved family. Lela and Allyn enjoyed raising their children, fishing, and going to the Riverboat.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother- Charles Batson, and sister- Evelyn Haught.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, December 16, 2016 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Robert Jilek officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held from 5-8pm on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home.
