Herrin- LELA MADELON POTEETE, age 93, of Herrin, passed away at 9:40am on Monday, December 5, 2011 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. Lela was born in Weaver, IL on December 18, 1917, the daughter of Nelson and Victoria Magnetti. She first married Kenneth E. Lane, a casualty of World War Two and secondly to Leon Poteete, who passed away in 1972. In her last few years of retirement and life, she had been very proud that she was the matriarch of five generations. She leaves a son- Ken (Gene) Lane and his wife Lou Ann of Herrin; Grandaughter- Kristi Jordan and husband Tim of Jeffersonville, Indiana; Grandson- Mike Lane of Sollersberg, Indiana- Grandson- Greg Lane and wife Patty of Bright, Indiana; six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, brothers- Tom and Paul Magnetti and sister- Tressie Magnetti. Mrs. Poteete was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. The bulk of her working career was spent in and around the Williamson County sheriffs office in Marion, where she first worked as a secretary to Sheriff Carl Miller and ended as a secretary to Sheriff Russell Oxford. She led a long and fruitful life until her illness took its toll. A funeral mass will be held at 10am on Friday, December 9, 2011 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Thursday, December 8, 2011 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
