Leland Ray Spiller

Herrin- Leland Ray Spiller, 70, of Herrin, passed away at 11:07 AM, Thursday, November 28, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Leland Ray was born on September 9, 1943 in Chicago to Harold B. and Rosalie “Elizabeth” (Payne) Spiller.  He married Shirley Atterberry on April 26, 1961 in Johnston City.  She survives of Herrin. He was a hardworking loyal man who began his career early by working at the Mobile filling station in Johnston City as a sophomore in high school. Next he was the Jeep driver for Norge and Maytag until 1976 when he started working at Old Ben # 21 in Sesser as the Miner Operator until he was hurt in an accident. He attended Second Baptist Church in Herrin and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and the Crab Orchard Boat and Yacht Club for more than 30 years.  He loved fishing and camping with his family at Crab Orchard and teasing his grandchildren.  He was a charming gentleman who adored and complimented his wife often and who will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Survivors include- Wife- Shirley Spiller of Herrin Daughter- Karen Shands and husband Kenny of Stiritz Daughter- Connie Lee Ezell of Herrin Daughter- Tracy Ann Hunter and husband Joe of Owings, MD Daughter in law- Carla Spiller of Herrin 11 grandchildren: Ronald Peters and James Peters of Herrin Jessica K. Evans of Johnston City Jason Carl Spiller of Herrin Christopher Roy Ezell of Herrin Joe, James, Makayla and John Hunter of Owings, MD Allison Spiller and Carl Spiller of Herrin 2 Great Grandchildren: Raeleah Spiller of Herrin Kamden James Peters of Herrin Brother- Harold Dean Spiller of Johnston City Sister- Linda Jones of Herrin Sister Brenda Capps of Marion Many nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, son- Allen Ray Spiller and sister- Charlotte Mize. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, December 2, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.  Rev. Don Colson will officiate.  Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville.  Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13^th St. / Herrin, IL   62948.
