Herrin- Leslie Richard Murray, 88, of Herrin, died at 6:18 PM, Saturday, March 6, 2004 at Herrin Hospital. Leslie was born on February 14, 1916 in Weaver, IL to Winfred & Ellen (Parrott) Murray. He married Mary Elizabeth Powers on September 27, 1934 in Herrin. She preceded him in death on July 16, 1988. Mr. Murray was a WWII Veteran, having served in the US Army. He retired from the Teamsters Union where he was employed as a truck driver for; Viking, ILMO, Tucker, and Egyptian Freight, all of Herrin. His CB handle was Tucker Trucker. He was a former member of the Herrin Eagles Lodge and the Teamsters Local in Herrin. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and was an avid motorcycle rider into his 70s. Leslie liked physical competition, particularly the sport of boxing and Friday Night Fights. SURVIVORS: Daughter- Betty Benshoff- Mason City, IL Dau & son in law- Dessie & Mike Baggott- Clarksville, TN Son- Leslie R. Murray, Jr.- Granite City, IL Son in law- Jack Newell- Herrin Twelve Grandchildren Numerous Great Grandchildren Numerous Great Great Grandchildren Great Great Great Grandchildren Numerous Nieces & Nephews & Great Nieces & Nephews Special Friend- Violet Benz- Herrin His parents, wife, one Daughter; Mary Ellen Newell, three sisters & one brother preceded him in death. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Terry Griffith will officiate. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens. The Herrin American Legion & VFW Posts will perform military rites at the graveside. Visitation will be from 6-9:00 PM Monday at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested to a charity of the donors choice and will be accepted at the funeral home.
