Leslie Warren "Les" Boyer

Marion- Leslie Warren “Les” Boyer, 71, passed away suddenly on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.  Les was born September 5, 1941 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky the son of Leslie Warren Boyer and Dorothy (Hester) Boyer.  He married Jane Quivey on December 25, 1964 in Lowell, Indiana and together they have shared over 48 years of marriage.  Les attended Purdue University where he was an NROTC cadet. He worked for the Boy Scouts and then as a sales rep for Piper Aircraft.  He came to Marion as a sales pilot for AeroFlite in 1969. He later flew for Zeigler Coal Company and Best Inns of America. Les was also the Police Chief for Spillertown for many years.  He also worked as a security guard and taught the security guard class at John A. Logan College for 15 years.  He was licensed to run a security agency and for the last two years was the Illinois agent for Virginia Security Agency.    Les was an active volunteer.  He was an umpire for several years for Marion Youth Baseball.  He taught hunter safety classes for more than 15 years, frequently teaching two generations of the same family.  He was a Cub Scout leader and Scout Master at First Methodist Church.  He also worked again as a professional scouter.  Les was very active in his church, St. James Episcopal.  He served several years on the Bishops Committee (board) and several times served as Bishops Warden (chairman) He was a licensed Lay Reader and was also licensed to preach. At an earlier time when the church was without a priest, Les conducted services for nearly a year to keep the church going.  He is survived by his:Wife-Jane Quivey Boyer of Marion; Three Children: Commander Leslie W. Boyer, USN, of Washington D.C.;  Laura Boyer Talbot of McAllen, Texas; Lane Boyer and wife Valerie of Herrin; Five adored grandchildren: McKenzie Boyer and Logan Warren Boyer;                Morgan Leslie Talbot and Lauren Abigail Talbot; Aria Elise Boyer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Dorothy Boyer, his step-parents, Virginia Boyer and Richard Reeder and by his granddaughter, Margaret Jane Talbot.  Memorial services will be held at the St. James Episcopal Church in Marion on Friday, May 10th at 10 A.M.  It was Les’s wish to be cremated and his ashes scattered over his beloved Pennsylvania Mountains by his son.  Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.   For those who prefer memorials may be made to the St. James Episcopal Church or the Marion Regional Humane Society.  Envelopes will be available and accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market Street, P.O.
