Lloyd Elisabeth Alexander Fosse

Lloyd Elisabeth Alexander Fosse of Marion, Illinois, died Monday, December 7, 2015 at her home.  She was 97 years old.  Mrs. Fosse, a native of Boonville, Indiana, was the second of three children born to Ben and Hattie Harris Alexander.  Mrs. Fosse was a Registered Nurse, a graduate of Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Evansville, Indiana.  She was a working nurse during the devastating flood of the Ohio River, in 1937, the largest flood in Evansville history.  She continued her nursing career in Carrollton and Springfield, Illinois.  She married Erwin Ray Fosse, of Marion, Illinois, on December 12, 1941, the day of his graduation from flight school as a newly commissioned lieutenant in the Army Air Corps.  Following Mr. Fosse’s return from World War II, Mrs. Fosse and her husband lived in Greenfield, Springfield, and Kankakee, Illinois.  They moved to the Marion area in 1983.  She began work at the Kankakee Daily Journal in Kankakee, Illinois, in 1956.  She became an award winning investigative reporter, and co-wrote the “His Community” series concerning a religious cult.  She was the reporter who covered the Kankakee Public Schools, and the race riots and unrest during 1969 and early 1970.  She was recognized by the Illinois Medical Association for her work reporting about public health issues including food safety and mental health.  She also served 2 years as a volunteer in the Reagan White House, while her husband was active in the United States Department of Agriculture.  Mrs. Fosse was a member of the Marion First Presbyterian Church and Chapter MN, P.E.O.  Mrs. Fosse is survived by her son, David (Jill), and daughter Janet Fosse Cravens (Cloyd), four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  She was preceded in death by her husband in 2009 and a brother, Robert Alexander and sister, Nedra Alexander Welde.  A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Marion at 10 am on Tuesday, December 15, 2015.  Private interment will be at a later date at the Mt. Pleasant Shed Cemetery near Marion. Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.  For those who prefer memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois.  Envelopes will be available the day of the service at the church or by mail to Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market Street, Marion, Illinois  62959.
