Lorraine Berra

Herrin- Lorraine Berra, 86, of Herrin, passed away at 1:20 PM, Friday, May 21, 2010 in Herrin. Lorraine was born on September 16, 1923 in Carbondale to Henry & Edna (Reed) Young. She married Herman Charles Berra on March 28, 1955 in Chicago. They shared forty six years of marriage until he preceded her in death on April 21, 2001. Lorraine was retired, having worked as a waitress for over thirty years at the Illinois Caf in Herrin. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin and former longtime member of the Franklin County Country Club in West Frankfort. Survivors include- Son- Michael Santos and wife Sandra of Manchester, CT Daughter- Janice Short and husband Jack of Herrin Grandson- David Short and wife Lisa of Carterville Grandson- Michael Charles Santos and wife Megan of New Hampshire Grandson- Peter John Santos of Manchester, CT Great Grandchild- Ethan Bentley of Herrin Great Grandchild- Andrew Short of Herrin Great Grandchildren- Todd Michael & Ella Santos of New Hampshire Lorraine also leaves behind her closest friend of over fifty-six years, Fairy Oldani. Fairy was like a sister to her and together they spent many hours working together and playing golf on Sunday afternoons. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers- Bill and Leonard Young and two sisters- Louise McHargue and Phyllis Maxton. The funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 AM, Monday, May 24, 2010 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The prayer service will also be held at 5:00PM on Tuesday evening at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations are suggested to the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel/Education Foundation and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St/ Herrin, IL 62948.
