Herrin- Louis R. Powenski, 83, of Herrin, passed away at 4:30 PM, Friday, January 18, 2013 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.
Louis was born on March 7, 1929 in Benton to Mike and Helen Sofa Ann (Shibovitch) Powenski. He served his country while enlisted in the United States Army.
Once honorably discharged, he began a career as an agent for the Internal Revenue Service, which continued until his eventual retirement.
He was catholic. He enjoyed animals, collecting and working on clocks, and gardening plants and vegetables. Louis had a keen sense of humor and enjoyed playing select songs on the piano.
Survivors include-
Brother- John Powen and wife Ann of Chicago
Brother- Marion Powenski and wife Merlene of Benton
Brother in law- Joe Marlo and wife Kay of Herrin
Sister in law- Carol Powenski of Sesser
Fourteen nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews
Close friend- Steve Carter of Herrin
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters- Ann Marlo and Rose Davison and three brothers, including his twin- Leo Powenski as well as Mike and Stanley Powenski.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 25, 2013 at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Inurnment will follow. Friends and family are asked to meet directly at the graveside. Memorial arrangements were made at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
