Marion- Lowell Thomas Tom Hartwell, 70, of Marion, passed away at 1:42 AM, Saturday, January 9, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family. Tom was born on February 28, 1939 in Marion to William McKinley & Cynthia Laveda (White) Hartwell. He married Shirley James on July 19, 1958 in Marion. She survives in Marion. Mr. Hartwell was a US Army veteran and served overseas in Germany. He retired after working many years as a carpenter. He was a longtime member of Marion Third Baptist Church. He was a member of Marion VFW Post #1301 and the Marion American Legion Post. He was a longtime member of the Military Honors Ritual Team. Survivors include- Wife- Shirley Hartwell of Marion Son- Timothy S. Hartwell & wife Andrea of Marion Daughter- Cynthia L. Hall & husband Ron of Carterville Seven Grandchildren: Jason LeMasters Robert Hartwell now serving in the Navy stationed at 29 Palms Dustin Hall Lindsey Marie Hartwell Jimmy Hall Nicholas Hartwell Matthew Hartwell Sister- Mary Kay Camden & husband Don of Marion Sister- Emily Jean Hoercher & husband Ken of Marion Brother in law- Harold Gene James & wife Jo Ann of Shellville, GA Brother in law- Don James & wife Lovina of Creal Springs Numerous Nieces & Nephews He was preceded in death by his parents and half brother- R.D. White. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Marion Third Baptist Church. Pastor Scott Kallem will officiate. Military rites will be performed immediately following the services at the church by the Marion VFW & American Legion Posts Ritual team. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of service, Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the Marion Third Baptist Church. Memorial arrangements were made by Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested to the Marion VFW & American Legion Ritual Team or to the Marion American Legion Baseball Team and will be accepted at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home/ 800 N. Market St/ Marion, IL 62959.
