Loy Ray Smith

Loy Ray Smith, 89, passed away at 1:13 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2013 in Plymouth, MI with family by his side. Loy Ray was born in Williamson County to Lacy and Lucille (Roper) Smith on November 15, 1923.   On February 3, 1946 he married Juanita Ozment at Crab Orchard Methodist Church.  They recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife, Juanita; daughter and husband, Charlotte and Larry Worthen of Livonia, MI; grandchildren, Cheri Worthen, Scott and Renee (Brozak) Worthen; siblings, Flo Dudley of Mount Vernon and several nieces and nephews.   Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Lacy and Lucille; siblings, Adolph Smith and Noel Smith. Mr. Smith retired from a career in education with the Crab Orchard and Marion School Systems. He served as a teacher, principal and basketball coach.  Mr. Smith enjoyed playing his guitar.  He traveled and performed with the Glorylanders Quartet for many years.  He was a Ham radio operator and enjoyed talking with radio friends daily.  He was a 50 year Mason, World War II veteran and life member of the VFW.  He served on the USS Fallon Navy ship as a pharmacy mate First Class in the Pacific during WW II.  He is a member of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.  Services for Mr. Smith will be held at the Mitchell Hughes Funeral Home in Marion on Thursdays, April 4 at 1 p.m with Rev. Jerry Schell officiating.  There will be a visitation prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Interment will follow the service at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Marion. Military rites will be presented by members of the  Marion’s VFW Post #1301, American Legion Post #147 and National Guard Flag Detail Unit.  Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church or Pleasant Grove United Methodist Cemetery.  Loy Ray was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family.  He will be missed by many people.
