Herrin- Margaret Anne Duncan, age 79, of Benton, formerly of Herrin, passed away at 4:29am on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Herrin Hospital.
Margaret was born in Herrin on August 12, 1936, the daughter of William Guy and Ruth (Stanley) Quillman. She married James Douglas Duncan in Mississippi on March 8, 1953. Together, they shared sixty years of marriage. He preceded her in death on November 27, 2013.
Mrs. Duncan was a member of the Herrin First Baptist Church since the age of twelve. She graduated from Herrin High School in 1955 and attended Maryville College where she received her paralegal certification. She had retired as a secretary and bookkeeper, having worked such places as Tri-City Redi-Mix and Coal Company of Buckner and WDDD Radio Station in Marion. She also worked as a paralegal for the St. Louis County Prosecutor’s office.
Mrs. Duncan was a member of several clubs and organizations, including Herrin Jr Woman’s Club, Past President of Benton Jr Woman’s Club, Past President of Madison County Homemakers Association, President of the Franklin County Homemakers Education Association, Collinsville, IL “Woman of the Year”, Past Public Relations and Past second Vice President of IAHCE (Illinois Association for Home and Community Education), Publisher and Editor for the IHCE Newsletter for five years, Secretary for the Franklin County University of Zillions Extension Council for six years, Court appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for both Madison and Franklin Counties, President of the Benton Elks Lady’s Auxiliary, Secretary and Publicity for the Daughters of Dorcas, Girl Scout and Brownie Leader, and the Adult Literacy Programs in Collinsville and Benton.
In her spare time, Margaret enjoyed traveling, fishing, and camping with her husband and children, to all parts of the United States, Canada, and parts of Mexico. She especially loved when the grandchildren were able to come along. She enjoyed attending all her grandchildren’s school activities and sporting events. She was also active in all her organizations and volunteering her time to help others, especially anything involving CASA’s kids.

Son- Jon Duncan and wife Dora of Benton
Nine Grandchildren- Karla Gunner, Jara Piper, Paul Warren, Danny Warren, Doug Warren, Robbie Warren, Travis Duncan, Taylor Duncan, and Jon Tyler Duncan

Brother-in-law- Willard Duncan of Chicago
Sister-in-law- Phyllis Surweic of Elkart, Indiana
She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father- Thomas Frattini, granddaughter- Ashley Ann Duncan, grandson- Dustin Eric Duncan, sister- Brenda Loyd, brother- William “Sam” Quillman, and three brother-in-laws- Larry Duncan, Bob Surweic and George Kaskie
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. William G. Elliott officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8pm on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home.
