Mario "Mike" Carneghi

Carterville- Mario 'Mike' Carneghi, age 82, of Carterville passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 7:05 a.m.  Mario was born May 7, 1930, in Herrin to Caesar Sr. and Theresa (Columbo) Carnaghi. He was retired from General Telephone Company.  Mario spent much of his time at the Knights of Columbus where he served as Financial Secretary and Grand Knight. Throughout the years, he also enjoyed cooking, bowling and golf.  Mario proudly served as a member of the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. His service was distinctly marked with a Purple Heart, a U.N. Service Medal, and a Gold Star in lieu of a 2nd Purple Heart. Military rites will be held to honor his service.  Mario is survived by his son, Marc Carneghi(and special friend Jennifer) of Wexford, PA; his daughter Letitia 'Tish' Carneghi of Springfield; his special friend Jo Bradshaw of Carterville; his brothers Louis V. (wife JoAnn) Carneghi of St. Peters, MO and Ernest Carnaghi of Herrin; his sister-in-law Judy Carnaghi of Maryland Heights, MO; and several nephews and nieces.  He is predeceased by his parents, his sister- Pauline Kovach, his sister- Charlotte Carnaghi- who died as a child, his brother- Caesar Jr, his brother-in-law- Orville Kovach, his sister-in-law- Jeanne Carnaghi, and his niece- Dawn Kovach.  In accordance with his wishes, no visitation will be held. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin at 11:00am on Friday, April 26, 2013 with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Family and friends are asked to gather directly at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Graveside services at SanCarloCemetery in Herrin will follow with military honors provided by Herrin Military Ceremonial Team comprised of Freeman Spur American Legion, Herrin American Legion, and Herrin VFW Post. Assistance will be provided by the National Guard Flag Honor Detail.  For those who prefer, memorials may be made to the Herrin Knights of Columbus or Hospice of Southern Illinois.  Envelopes will be available and accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home; 201 S 13th Street; Herrin, IL62948.  For more information, or to sign the memorial guest register, please visit www.hughesfuneralhomes.com
