Marvin D. Mayer, age 75, of Marion, died at 11:30 P.M. on Tuesday, June 5th, 2001, at his home.
Visitation was from 11:00 A.M. until the service at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, June 8th, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, followed by burial at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. Father Richard Mohr officiated. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to Hearts Helping Hearts at Marion Memorial Hospital.
Marvin was born on March 5, 1926 in Marion to John E. and Ola (Childers) Mayer. They both preceded him in death. He married Marianne Robison on December 27, 1986 in Marion.
He started Mayer Brothers Motor Sales with his brother Gene in 1946 when they purchased a little gas station on West Main Street across from Marion Memorial Hospital. They later acquired Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, GMC and Mercedes-Benz franchises in 1960. Marvin retired in 1984. He was one of the founders of Kokopelli Estates and Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife Marianne; the mother of his children, Juanita Mayer; his son and daughter-in-law, Gary & Debbie Mayer; two daughters and a son-in-law, Donna Maginness and Cheryl (& Fred) Motsinger; two step-sons and a daughter-in-law, Greg (& Susan) Kessel and Scott Robison, all of Marion.
He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Kevin (& wife Bonnie) Skoffic, Michael (& wife Cathy) Motsinger, Greg (& wife Monica) Mayer, Brian (& wife Marla) Motsinger, Melissa (& husband Dan) Rose, Curt Mayer, and Chelsea Mayer; three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Gene & Bettie Mayer of Marion, and one sister, Avis Gortz of Palm Springs, California. He was preceded him in death by one sister, Helen Soref.
