Marion Mary Jane Merrell, 82, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, March 02, 2005 at 6:00 P.M. at Hospice of West Alabama. Mary Jane was born March 21, 1922 to Robert & Alice Irene (Conroy) Mentz in Chicago. She married Dr. Hosmer Tryon Merrell on April 23, 1942 in Oak Park, Illinois and he survives in Tuscaloosa. Mary Jane worked along with her husband at their medical practice. After their son David was killed in Vietnam at the age of 19 they also volunteered at the VA Hospital. She was a charter member of the Womens Auxiliary of Marion Memorial Hospital and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion. Mary Jane is survived by: Her husband Dr. Merrell of Tuscaloosa, AL Daughter Linda Merrell Wertheim and husband George of San Francisco, CA Son Jim Merrell and wife Kathy of Tuscaloosa, AL Granddaughter Erika Ross Merrell of Oxford, OH Grandson David Ross Merrell of Tuscaloosa, AL Several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews including: Julie Williamson of Big Rock, IL Jack Mentz of Aurora, IL Jim Mentz of Collinsville, IL Jerry Mentz of Collinsville, IL Bill Burger of Butte, MT Sandra & Bill Blankenship of Marion And their children and grandchildren Preceded by: Parents, Son David R. Merrell, Brothers Robert & John Mentz and Sister-in-law Marjorie Merrell Burger A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 5th at 2:00 P.M. at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Victor Long officiating. Dr. Merrell will give his wifes eulogy. Visitation with the family will be held on hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Marion Civic Center or to the Carnegie Library. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
