Herrin- Mary Jane Stampini, 82, of Herrin, died at 12:01 AM, Sunday, February 15, 2004 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.
Mary Jane was born on August 20, 1921 in Danville, IL to William Leslie & Vera (Ogreaifa) Howey. She married Tony Stampini at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Herrin on June 16, 1979. He preceded her in death on August 11, 1993.
Mary served in the Womens Army Corp from 1950-1952. She was owner operator of Harts Rooming House and was formerly employed by the Rome Club for 14 years, Sangamo Electric, a waitress at the Eagles, and a bartender at the Knights of Columbus.
She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and the American Legion (five times commander of post and most recently as chaplain). She was chaplain, Junior Vice and senior vice of the 25th District of the American Legion. She also belonged to the Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus Ladies Aux., American Legion Ladies Aux., Egyptian Past Commanders Club, the Jeeptettes, and the Herrin Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one step son; Terry Stampini, and sister in law; Louise Venegoni.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery. The Herrin VFW & American Legion Posts will perform military rites at the graveside. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.
