Herrin - Mary Rose Martell, 83, died at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, 2001 at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, IL. She was born August 25, l9l8 in Italy to Phillip and Maria (Monteleone) Romano. She married Joseph J. Martell on April 7, l934 in Bush, IL. He survives. She was a longtime bookkeeper in the family business Martell's Truck Body and Manufacturing Company in Herrin and she was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, a member of the Catholic Women's Club, a longtime member of the Church choir and a CYC Sponsor. She was a wonderful cook. Survivors include: Husband - Joe Martell - Herrin Daughter - Virginia Schleper - Decatur, IL Daughter and son in law - Josephine and Ron Cambron - St. Louis, MO Granddaughter - Jennifer Kretsinger - Decatur, IL Grandchild - Cameron Schleper - Springfield, IL Great grandchild - Garrett Jon-Taylor Pirtle - Decatur, IL Sister - Carmela Aloffo - Herin Sister - Vee Vaccaro - Herrin Sister in law and brother in law - Mary and Joe Barringer - Carbondale, IL Brother in law and sister in law - James and Josephine Romano- Sparta, IL Several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews Her parents, and stepmother, Frances Romano and two sons preceded her in death. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a. m. on Monday, October 29, 2001 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Msg. Ken Schaefer will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 28 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Burial will be at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Memorials may be made to OLMC/St. Mary's School Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home.
