Mary Scerena

Herrin- Mary Scerena, 80, of Herrin, passed away at 7:12 PM, Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Mary was born on November 27, 1925 in Hina, Syria to Hillel & Beladiyi Boshera. Mary became an American citizen in 1954. She married Charles Wendell Scerena on December 30, 1983 in Herrin. He preceded her in death on September 1, 1992. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Scerena worked in various capacities at Allen Industries and Smoller Brothers in Herrin. She was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed her dog, Norton, tending to her rose garden and sewing and knitting. SURVIVORS: Daughter & son in law- Mary (Kheniser) & Thomas Young- St. Louis, MO Grand-daughter- Annika Scerena Young- St. Louis, MO Step Son & daughter in law- Mark & Lola Scerena- Herrin Step Daughter & son in law- Elena & Steve Goins- Herrin Step Grandchildren: Jason Scerena- Herrin Kyle Scerena- Herrin Molly Goins- Herrin She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother; Jamil Boshera, and one sister; Jamily Barakat. The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 17, 2006 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service Friday at the church. Funeral services are being provided by Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the American Lung Association or The American Heart Association and envelopes will be available at both the church and the funeral home.
