Nadine Louise Murrah

Herrin-Nadine Louise Murrah departed this life at 8:35 p.m., Sunday, December 23, 2007, with her family at her side. Nadine was born March 6, 1926, in Johnston City, the seventh of twelve children born to Thomas Edward and Annie (Hampsey) Hyden. Nadine attended school in Shakerag and Johnston City. At the age of seventeen, Nadine left southern Illinois for Ypsilanti, Michigan to work in a B-24 Bomber plant while her future husband, C.J. Murrah, served his country in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. West Virginia. C.J. would nearly lose his life on an Easter Sunday Kamikaze attack that would leave him with the life-long nickname "Lucky." Nadine dedicated her life to Christ at an early age and held devoutly to her faith throughout her life. Following World War II, Nadine and "Lucky" were married on September 6, 1946, in Piggott, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on August 17, 1994. Nadine was a homemaker until her daughters were grown. She was then employed at Container Stapling in Herrin until her retirement in 1989. Nadine was a skilled seamstress and an avid reader until she lost her vision to macular degeneration seven years ago. She was a loving caring mother and grandmother with a charitable heart, always giving what she could to those less fortunate. Left to cherish her memory are daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Gary Hernbeck; granddaughter (and the joy of her life) Sadie Atterberry and fianc John Hunsaker, all of Herrin; step-grandson Scott Hernbeck, wife Cathy and son Noah of Nashville, Tennessee; step-granddaughter, Tanya Nickens and son(Nadine's special little helper) Jaylen Nickens of Herrin; daughter Charlene and husband Wally of Kansas City, MO; grandsons Jeffrey and David Planthold and great-granddaughter Eva Planthold; three sisters, Betty (Bill) Murrah, Peggy (Richard) Heath, and Connie Lukowski; one brother Virgil (Margie) Hyden; sister-in-law Betty June (Carl) Gleaton. She was preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law, Edith and Charles E. Murrah; two sisters who died in infancy; sisters Jessie Lee Lingle, and Mary W. Hyden; three brothers, Ralph Hyden, Luther Hyden, and Thomas Edward Hyden and special grandson-in-law, Don Micheal Nickens. Her daughter, Sheila, wishes to thank the following: Nadine's "Adduss Girls", Stephanie, Debra, and Sylvanna; special care givers and friends, Regina Smith, Mark Hall, and Kay Sanders, Nadine's good buddy, Kathy Williams, Reverend Donnie Colson; and a heart- felt thank you to Jo and Dennis Perry of Compassion Fellowship, and to Hospice of Southern Illinois for the love and compassion shown Nadine during her final days of this life. "All I am, all I ever hope to be, I owe to my mother." -Abraham Lincoln. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, December 27, 2007 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial will follow at Oddfellows Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until time of service, Thursday, at the funeral home.
