Nellie Mitchell, 90, passed away in her sleep at 11:00 p.m. Monday, December 10, 2001 at Parkway Manor in Marion
Visitation will be Saturday, December 15, 2001 at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. when the funeral services will begin. Dr. Joey Brent of First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Nellie asked that instead of flowers, please make memorial contributions to First Baptist Church or the charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Mrs. Mitchell was born in Carrier Mills on October 16, 1911, the daughter of Emery and Gertrude (Luckett) Thompson. Since infancy her aunt and uncle the late Charles and Susan Ozment reared her. She wrote that a notable event in her life was," To have had parents (who really were my Aunt and Uncle) who believed in discipline, the attending of church and in education." She was a graduate of the University of Illinois in 1933. Nellie also wrote that the births of her two children gave her great joy.
She was married to Leonard H. Mitchell on June 1, 1934 in Carbondale. He preceded her in death on November 26, 1980. Her parents, two infant sisters and two brothers also preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker and co-owner of Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home along with her husband until their retirement. She loved to travel, having visited all fifty states and twenty-two foreign countries. Nellie became a member of First Baptist Church in Marion in 1922. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daniel H. Brush Chapter, Life member of Marion Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Marion Woman's Club, Charter member of the American Association of University Women, former member of Clio Club, and an Early Nutrition Case Aide Worker in Marion.
Nellie is survived by Son and Daughter-in-law: John R. and Linda Mitchell of Huntington Beach, CA - Daughter and Son-in-law: Susan Elizabeth and Bill Hamer of Marion - Six grandchildren: Joel Mitchell of Austin, TX - Rebecca Lint of Huntington Beach, CA - Delaina Mitchell of Los Angeles, CA - Lisa Forbes of Atlanta, GA - Anne Baldwin of Atlanta, GA - and Mitchell Lemasters of Kentwood, MI. Six great grandchildren: Katie, Christine, and Jessica Lint, Samantha and Lauren Forbes, and Shea Baldwin.
