Marion- NELLIE PEARL JONES, age 95, of Marion, passed away at 6:05am on Monday, October 3, 2011 at Herrin Hospital. Nellie was born on a hill in Makanda on August 16, 1916, the daughter of Sam and Rosa (Marshall) Beshears. She married James Foster who preceded her in death. From their union came two children- James Foster-Popejoy of Michigan and the late Flo Ann Foster-Popejoy. Nellie later married James Jones and from this union also came two children- Donald (Lucille) Jones of Texas and Robert (Sophia) Jones of Chicago. After James death, she married Everett Ray. They shared a daughter- Rose (Ronald) Riley of Marion. Everett also preceded Nellie in death. Nellie later married Charles E. Jones in Carbondale on June 13, 1969. He preceded her in death on May 29, 1995. In addition to her four children, survivors also include nine grandchildren- Terry Haynes of Texas, Kimberly (Lee) Sharkey of Marion, Deanna (Scott) Smith of Belleville, Donnie (Theresa) Jones of Texas, Teresa Fossee of Mississippi, Rosa (Saryad) Jones of Chicago, Peter (Maria) Jones of Chicago, Rebecca (Michael) Kelly of Chicago, and Robert (Josesa) Jones of Chicago; twenty-eight great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren, special nieces- Vivian Florence of Carbondale and Barbara Reed of Cambria; special friends- Bob and Audrey Brown of Hurst-Bush; and numerous other nieces, nephews and friends. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, daughter- Flo Ann Foster-Popejoy, and eleven brothers and sisters. Nellie was able to spend her working years doing what she loved, which was cooking. She worked as a cook at various nursing homes. In her later years, she worked as a caregiver, retiring at the age of seventy. Nellie will always be remembered for her cooking, especially her dumplins and remarkable pies. She will be missed by many. Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Friday, October 7, 2011 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will follow at Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10-1pm on Friday at the funeral home.
