Herrin- NORMAN E. "GOMER" BURGESS, age 63, of Herrin, passed away at 10:24am on Friday, January 4, 2008 at his home in Herrin. Norman was born in Herrin on December 13, 1944, the son of James W. and June (Rich) Burgess. He married Ina Howerton in Herrin on June 26, 1965. Together, they have shared forty-two years of marriage. She survives in Herrin. Mr. Burgess was a retired coal miner from Freeman Coal Company. He was a member of the Herrin American Legion and the Marion Eagles. Survivors include his wife- Ina (Howerton) Burgess of Herrin, IL Four Sons- Ernest and Sharon Burgess of Herrin, IL Thomas E. and Christine Burgess of Herrin, IL Paul and Catherine Burgess of Herrin, IL Fred Burgess of Herrin, IL Five Grandchildren- Ashley and Adam Goeke of DuQuoin, IL Andrew, Joshua, Dalton and Angela Burgess of Herrin, IL One great grandchild- Taylor Sue Goeker of DuQuoin, IL One Brother- Dennis Burgess of Johnston City, IL Two Sisters- Beverly and Joe Rosenberger of Crainville, IL Christine and Leo McDonald of Friso, IN Several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers- Jim and Bill Burgess, and one sister- Kathleen Smith. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at Johnson- Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Ed Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-9pm on Monday, January 7, 2008 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home. For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home; 201 S. 13th Street; Herrin, IL 62948
