Paul Langan passed away in Marion on February 15, 2018, at the age of 87 after a battle with cancer. He will be sorely missed at his church, in his community, and by his family and friends.
Paul was first a devoted Christian. He remained involved in the work of his church wherever he lived. As a long time member of Warder Street Baptist Church he served in a number of leadership capacities. As a minister, ordained at the age of 75, he frequently volunteered to help others by serving as a board member for the SIU Baptist House and chaplain at Heartland Hospital.
Paul was also a career educator. After a tour in the US Army in the 1950’s, he earned his master’s degree and doctorate in education. His career spanned 35 years with positions ranging from high school teacher to college professor and administrator in locations ranging from the Chicago suburbs to Southern Illinois at Kaskaskia College and Spoon River College.
He was a devoted and active member of his community as well. He served on the board of the Marion Senior Citizens Center as its secretary/treasurer. He coordinated the schedule for the Marion Music Makers, a group that performed at nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Paul also served in the Rotary to help support their scholarship program, water well-building program in Africa, and bottle cap collection for Marion Rotary Friendship Benches.
Paul will be missed by his daughters and their husbands, Deb (Larry) Hays and Pam (Ron) Ladnier, his brothers and their wives, Leon (Virginia) Langan and John (Doris) Langan, his sister and her husband, Frances (Larry) Clayton and many dear friends to include Mary Crippen. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Lauren Hays, Marie (Kyle) Chitty, and David Ladnier, as well as his great-grandchildren, Jason and Jordan Chitty, and other extended family members.
A private memorial service will be held. Memorial donations may be sent to the Marion Rotary Scholarship Fund/PO Box 341/Marion, IL 62959, for the Paul & Lois Langan Scholarship.
