Herrin- Pauline Rose (Carnaghi) Eovaldi, age 92, of Naperville, IL, formerly of Herrin, passed away at  7:12am on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at her daughter’s home in Naperville. Pauline was born in Herrin, IL, on May 17, 1921, to Guiseppe (Joe) and Enrica (Kata) Carnaghi. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and graduated from St. Mary's School and HerrinHigh School. After graduating High School, Pauline left Herrin for Italy in 1939, where she was stranded due to the invasions of WWII. She spent the next 6 ½ years there, and became a member of the Christian Democracy (the Partisan underground) and helped fight against the Germans who had invaded Italy. Pauline did this while living under the same roof with the German officers who had overtaken her parents Hotel and home. She was present at the gas station in Milano when Mussolini and his girlfriend were hung from the rafters. In recognition of her brave and valiant work during the war, Pauline received a medal from “Senator” Giovanni Mercaro (former head of the Partisan Resistance in Northern Italy), which was hand delivered to her in the States by partisan member Johnny Morani. She returned to Herrin in 1946. On July 1, 1947 she married the love of her life, the late Angelo J. Eovaldi, who had served in the Army, and waited for her return. She was the loving mother of Joseph Paul Eovaldi and Paula K (Jim) Rancilio. Her grandchildren include Gillian Eovaldi (Tom) Dilts of Villa Hills, Ky, Megan Eovaldi (Dan) McElheney of Erlanger, KY, Kara Rancilio Gallagher of Lisle, Il and Jeff Rancilio of Los Angeles, CA, and her Great-children A. J., Ryan, and Maria Dilts, Riley and Brendan Gallagher, Luke and John McElheney. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband- Angelo. Pauline was a member of the Daughters of Mary, and the Ladies Pinocle Club. She worked at Zwick's Shoe Store for about 25 years until moving to Troy, Michigan, in 1972. Upon Angelo's retirement in 1986, she, Angelo, and her mother moved to Naperville. She became a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Pauline loved to cook and to bake. All of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember her for her spaghetti and meatballs, her ravioli, and her pie crust cookies. She was an avid golfer and was still a member of the Naperbrook Women's Golf Association 9 Hole League and the Springbrook Ladies 18 Hole Golf League, having played golf at both courses (at age 92) the entire summer. Pauline was also a member of the Springbrook Intersuburban Golf League Southern Division for several years. She won many awards and trophies, and made 4 “holes in one” during her golfing career. For the 12 years her daughter co-owned and directed a pre-school in Naperville, Pauline was known and loved by the children, parents, and teachers, and was known to all as the “Grandma of Small Wonder Pre-School”. Pauline was a vibrant, outgoing, loving and caring woman who loved life, lived it to the fullest, and made life-long friends wherever she went. She will be remembered for her strong, loving hugs, her wonderful sense of humor, and her beautiful smile.
