Richard Smith

Marion- Richard Wayne Smith, 85, of Marion, formerly of Arcola and Mattoon, died at 9:23 AM, Thursday, April 25, 2019 at his home.

Richard was born at home in Liberty Township, IL on March 29, 1934.  He was the fifth child and fourth son of Ernest L. and Edna O. (Nettles) Smith. 

Dick retired from Quantum Chemicals (formerly USI) in 1992 after 36 years.  When he retired, he was process shift supervisor in the Alcohol unit.  He served as the Vice President of Local 515 of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

He was an active adult leader of Scout Troop 88 and Pack 96 of the Boy Scouts of America.  He served on the Arcola City Council, Humboldt Village board and served as Democrat precinct committeeman in Humboldt Township.  His hobbies included fishing, mushroom hunting, woodworking, gardening, landscaping, reading and woodcarving.  He created several walking sticks and made wooden toys.

Survivors include- his daughters- Denise Stearnes and husband Bryan of Marion, Jill Kelley of Jewett, IL and Terri Reed and husband David of Sullivan, daughter-in-law-Carolyn Smith of Arcola, step-daughters- Debbie Edwards and husband Steve of Arcola, Kathy Pullen of Humboldt, IL and Linda McCowen and husband Drew of Ft. Riley, KS.  Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Sally Smith, former wife MaryBelle Fulton, son- Kevin Smith, son in laws- Terry Kelley and Doug Pullen and brothers- George, Elmer, Delmar, Leroy and Raymond and sister- Edna Charles.

His wish was to be cremated with no services. Memorial arrangements were made at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion.
