Pittsburg- Robert J. Schafer, 80, of Pittsburg, passed away at 10:23 AM, Sunday, May 27, 2007 at his home.
Robert was born on March 6, 1927 in Marion to Marion Harris & Carrie E. (Ditterline) Schafer. He married Thelma Lemasters on August 18, 1945 in Crab Orchard. She survives of Pittsburg.
Mr. Shafer was a Navy Veteran who fought bravely during WWII. Bob was a unique man who lived a rambunctious life in his early years, but mellowed as he aged. He retired as supervisor from Calhoun Construction Company in Springfield. He worked for CCC for many years as the dirt boss on highway construction projects.
Bob loved his family, friends, horses and dogs. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and horse shows. He was very proud of the farm, Lazy S Ranch, and the time he and his family spent improving the quarter horses and hunting dogs they had through the years. He liked to sit on the front porch and enjoy the lake and the wildlife. He spent many hours watching his son, grandson and great grandchildren play ball.
He attended Pittsburg United Methodist Church and was a member of VFW Post #1301 & American Legion Post #147 and the American Quarter Horse Association.

Son & daughter in law- Larry J. & Laura Schafer of Marion
Daughter- Vicky Schafer of Vienna
Grandson- Jay Schafer and wife Michelle of Marion
Great Grandchildren- Montana & Cole Schafer
Brother & sister in law- Jim & Lynn Schafer of Marion
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother- Gene Schafer.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. Rev. April Turner will officiate. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Marion. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Marion VFW & American Legion Posts. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 PM, Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion.
