Roy Kenneth "Shorty" Clendenin

Herrin- Roy Kenneth “Shorty” Clendenin, age 77, of Herrin, went to be with the Lord at 1:30pm on Friday, August 30, 2013, surrounded by his family at his home.  Shorty was born in Marion on October 11, 1935 to Earl and Velma (Fletcher) Clendenin. He married Sue (Rumsey) Murphy on September 1, 1967.  They would have been celebrating their 46^th wedding anniversary.  Mr. Clendenin proudly served in the United States Army as a missile guard in the demilitarized zone during the Korean War.  Once honorably discharged, he returned home and began his careers, first as a boss in road construction and bridge building and later as a roof bolter and miner operator for Freeman # 6 Mine in Orient.  He retired in 1991 after more than 20 years as a miner.  He was a member of UMWA.  Shorty enjoyed hunting, for whatever was in season, and fishing his favorite spots like Dutchmans Lake and Glen O. Jones Lake.  He was a loving Dad, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather and will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.  Survivors include his wife- Sue Clendenin of Herrin Son in law- Roger Bird of Herrin Son- Charles and Jean Murphy of O’Fallon, MO Daughter- Jemmia and Chuck Coleman of Herrin Son- Kenny Ray and Dawn Clendenin of Energy Daughter- Jada Frick of Marion Grandchildren- Cassie and Ryan Jeralds of Herrin      Josh Lindsay of Herrin      Meghan Murphy of O’Fallon, MO      Dean and Pauly Coleman of Herrin      Tyler and Kady Clendenin of Energy      Ezra, Ethan, Elliot, Carter, Corbin, and Catherine Frick of Marion      Jon and Kristy Bird and children of Herrin      Jeff and Sonya Bird and children of Turkey      Justin and Amanda Bird of Herrin Great Grandchildren-Maddie and Brennan Jeralds of Herrin      Bentley Stucker of Cambria      Eastyn Stucker of Energy Sister and Brother-in-law- Connie and Ed Brooks of Benton Several nieces and nephews  He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law- Charles and Vivian Rumsey, Daughter- Deloris Bird, Grandsons- James Kenneth Lindsey and Charles Lee Murphy II, and two brothers- Bob and Ronald Wayne Clendenin.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 with Rev. Don Colson and Rev. David Soreson officiating. Burial will follow at DillinghamCemetery in Corinth with military honors provided by Herrin Military Ceremonial Team comprised of Freeman Spur American Legion, Herrin American Legion, and Herrin VFW Post. Assistance will be provided by the National Guard Flag Honor Detail. Visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Monday, September 2, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to a favorite charity.
