Shirley A. Marlow-Anderson passed away peacefully at 4:30am on Jan. 22, 2019 at Parkway Manor Nursing Home in Marion Illinois. Shirley was 95 years old.
Shirley was born September 7, 1923 in Canton, Ohio, the daughter of Hobert and Eunice Givens. When Shirley was 4 months old, the family moved to Herrin to live and work. Shirley's father, Hobert, died in 1927 of complications from being gassed and wounded in France during World War I. Shirley's mother, Eunice, later marr
ied Harry Meadows and the family moved to Carbondale.
Shirley and the family returned to Herrin and as a young woman she worked at the Marlow's and Annex movie theaters, White City Park and at the family's grocery store on West Monroe Street. As an adult, Shirley worked for Sears, retiring after 37 years of service.
Before her failing health, Shirley was a faithful member of the Methodist Church in Herrin. Reading and caring for her cat companions were two of her greatest loves. Shirley had many wonderful stories of the exciting times at White City Park during its heyday. At home, she always looked forward to popping popcorn and having movie night. Shirley was a gentle, caring person who was constantly looking out for, helping, and caring for others. She enjoyed volunteering at the Pantry and other service organizations.
Shirley's survivors include stepson Glenn (Kathy) Marlow, stepgrandson Jason Marlow, and stepson Joe (Susan) Anderson.
As a young woman she married James Jacques and that marriage ended in divorce. Shirley was preceded in death by husbands Caesar J. Marlow and Martin Glenn Anderson. Her stepdaughter, Brenda Marlow Witters, also preceded her in death in 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 11am on Monday, January 28, 2019 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating. Burial will follow in Egyptian Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 9 am until the time of service at the funeral home.
