Terry Dawson Hughes

Herrin- Terry Dawson Hughes, 70, of Herrin, passed away at 12:29 AM, Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Parkway Manor in Marion. Terry was born on October 4, 1938 in Herrin to Odus & Christine (Dawson) Hughes. He attended Herrin Unit Schools and graduated from Herrin High School in 1956. He earned his bachelors and masters degree in Educational Administration from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He married Renalda Rennie Berra on June 18, 1960 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She survives of Herrin. He faithfully and compassionately pursued teaching/coaching. He began his career at Ladue High School in Ladue, MO which led to a job as swim coach at West High School in Davenport, IA. Next he taught at Frances Howell High School in St. Charles, MO and then at Center High School in Kansas City. He spent the next twenty five years as principal at Hurst-Bush and then six years as principal of St. Marys School in Herrin. His life was spent as a loving, guiding, understanding father & husband. His humor was always welcomed by everyone. He loved community involvement and served on the Herrin City Park Board and as Treasurer for the City of Herrin for numerous years. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin and was a proud member of the Herrin K.Cs. In his spare time he enjoyed playing tennis and golf and spending time with his family. Survivors include- Wife- Rennie Hughes of Herrin Son & daughter in law- Dr. Christopher & Kelly Hughes of Herrin Grandchildren- Marlo & Sofia Hughes of Herrin Aunt- Maxine Pearce of Carterville Sister in law- Cathy (Berra) Bleem of Havana, IL Cousin- Lou Ann (Dawson) Lane & husband Ken of Herrin Cousin- Don Newcom & wife Gloria of Herrin Cousins- Lon & Mark Hughes of Colorado Cousin- Diane Hay of Kirkland, WA Several nieces & nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, loving step mother- Kathryn Hughes Breland, grandson- Michael Anthony Hughes, grandparents- Fox & Maude Hughes and uncle & aunt- J.C. & Ann Hughes. A private graveside memorial service will be held on, Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. A memorial visitation will be from 5-8:00 PM, Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. A prayer service will be held at 5:00 PM, Tuesday at the funeral home. A special memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin at 8:15 AM, Friday, November 7, 2008 so the children can be present and remember how he loved and cared for their well being. In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested to OLMC/ Education Fund or to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital and will be accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home/ 201 S. 13th St./ Herrin, IL 62948
