Thelma L. McElroy

Herrin- Thelma Louise McElroy, 94, of Herrin, passed away at 10:25 AM, Monday, May 28, 2018 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. Thelma was born on September 5, 1923 in Herrin to Alwishes and Lillie Pearl (Burns) Prewitt. She married George McElroy, Jr. at a candlelight service on May 19, 1941 at the Herrin First Christian Church. He preceded her in death on August 8, 1980. She was a homemaker and the membership director of Southern Illinois Inc, a private non-profit meant to work for economic development for 26 counties. She was an active member of Herrin First Christian Church. She was also a former member of the Federation Union Club. Thelma was a talented lady who could accomplish most tasks, whether they beconstruction or otherwise, she could handle it. She was an attractive woman who enjoyed fashion and shopping. She was an avid traveler and lived in France for a short time as well as spending time in Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and Germany. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include- Daughter- Bonnie Sue Rowland and husband Robert of Atlanta Grandchildren - Alisa Sue Throgmorton and John Throgmorton One Great Grandson- Niece- Evelyn Williams and husband Trerry of Herrin Nephew- Richard Prewitt and wife Josephine of Herrin Nephew- Ronald Dean and Jeaneene of Washington She was preceded in death by her parents, husband brothers- Earl and Ralph Prewitt. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Ron Henwood will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
