Herrin- Velma Childers, 91, of Herrin, passed away peacefully at 7:58 PM, Saturday, March 3, 2007 at Fountains Care Center in Marion. Velma was born on December 8, 1915 in Clifford to Charles H. & Annie (Carney) Johnson. She married Joseph Paul Joe Childers on July 6, 1966 in Herrin. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2005. Mrs. Childers retired as sales clerk in 1966 from Hookers Dept. Store in downtown Carterville. She was a member of the clerks union in Carterville. Velma was a spiritual woman who understood unconditional love and saw the good in everything and everyone. She was an adventurous woman, who despite not owning a car or having a drivers license, managed to travel extensively with her husband. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch and keeping up with her neighbors and neighborhood. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Fountains and Hospice of Southern Illinois and special gratitude to Treena Stacey, who has been Velmas personal caregiver for the past two years. Survivors include: Sister - Virginia Johnson of Carterville Sister - Rose Robinson of Carterville Sister & brother in law- Betty & Al Albertsen of Carson City, NV Sister in law- Genevieve Carney of Carterville Several nieces and nephews including: Nephew- Jim Johnson & wife Lavonna of Carterville Niece- Debra Johnson & companion Joyette Brems of Framingham, MA Longtime family friend- Milton Woody Woods of Herrin She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers- William Johnson, Ray Carney & Charles Eugene Johnson, sister- Opal Sarallo & one nephew- Doug Carney. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Brad Harlow will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until time of service, Tuesday at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home. Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
