Velma Smith

Herrin- VELMA M. SMITH, age 93, of Herrin, passed away at 6:50am on Friday, December 31, 2010 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. Velma was born in Makanda on January 23, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Susan Mae (Poff) Ogden. She married Rex H. Smith in Marion in February of 1944. He preceded her in death on January 7, 1974. Before her retirement, Mrs. Smith was a sales clerk at Woolworths in Herrin. She enjoyed working in her yard. Survivors include several nieces and nephews- Zelma Switzer of Herrin Shirley Orso of Herrin Cara Upchurch of Florida Judy Blunt of Florida Wanda Frizzell of Tennessee Steve Myers of Herrin Randy Ogden of Herrin Gary Ogden of Herrin Joyce Rhyne of Herrin Kenneth Ogden of Herrin Velma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband- Rex, two brothers- Virgil and Wayne Ogden, and half-sister- Lorene Myers. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy. Rev Don Colson will officiate. Family and friends are asked to gather directly at the cemetery. Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin is assisting the family with arrangements.
