VIRGIL "BIRD" MELVIN
Herrin - Virgil Henry "Bird" Melvin, 91, died at 12:l0 a.m. on Friday, January 11,
2002 at the Marion VA Medical Center.
Mr. Melvin was born September 26, 1910 in Murphysboro, IL to William Henry "Shanty" and Nora Sara (Harris) Melvin.
He married Madelin Dezutti on July 5, 1948 at OLMC Catholic Church in Herrin, IL. She survives.
He was a 50 year baseball scout working primarily for the St. Louis Cardinals and was a 50 year pipefitter. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Greater St. Louis Major League Baseball Scouts and was a lifetime member of the American Legion & VFW, Herrin Elks and Pipefitters Local l60. He was a member of OLMC Catholic Church in Herrin. He was a veteran of WW II and served in the Army and Air Craft Division.

Niece - Candy Thomas & husband Bill - Carterville, IL
Niece- Sharon Duzutti- Long Beach, CA.
Niece-Anette Ahlm-Dallas, TX.
Great Niece: Marla Dallas of Murphysboro, IL.
Several other great nieces & nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, Joe, Clyde, Roy, Robert and Buck Melvin, 3 sisters, Violet Crawshaw, Dorothy Welch and Margaret Frickie.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 14, 2002 at OLMC Catholic Church in Herrin. Msg. Ken Schaefer will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Burial will be at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Prayer service will be held at 7:00 P.M.
