HERRIN- Virgil Hampton, age 87, of Herrin, passed away at 12:40am on Thursday February 2, 2006 at the Naples Community Hospital in Naples, FL. Virgil was born in Carterville on October 16, 1918 to Anthony (Tony) and Ethel (Watson) Hampton. He married Marguerite I. Walker in 1938. They were married until her death on February 27, 2005. Mr. Hampton was member of the Abundant Life Assembly of God Church in Marion. Virgil was a former supervisor for Norge (Maytag), Timex Corporation of Little Rock, AR, and Edmond Hans Industries of Mount Vernon. Prior to his retirement in 1982, Virgil was co-owner/administrator of Hampton Nursing Manor (presently the Shawnee Christian Nursing Center) in Herrin. He was a former past president of the Illinois Nursing Home Association and a pioneer in the development of skilled care nursing facilities. Survivors include- son- Larry Hampton- Monroe City, MO son and daughter-in-law Richard and Susan Hampton- rural Southern Illinois 1 daughter and son-in-law- Tamra (Tammy) and Jim Nashman- Naples, FL 6 grandchildren- Tony Hampton- Bethalto, IL Theresa Hampton Metz- Bethalto, IL Rachel Hampton Gebhardt- Swansea, FL Shane Hampton- OFallon, IL Meagan Nashman- Naples, FL Jordan Nashman- Naples, FL 7 great grandchildren 1 sister- Naomi (Hampton) Manering- Carbondale, IL Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, his wife-Marguerite, and his brother- Wesley Hampton. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm on Monday February 6, 2006 at the Abundant Life Assembly of God Church in Marion with Rev. Jeff Baker officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be held from 1:30 pm until time of service Monday February 6, 2006 at the Abundant Life Assembly of God Church in Marion. Services are being provided by Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Memorial donations may be made to the Abundant Life Assembly of God Church in Marion or to an organization of the donors choice.
