Wayne J. Garrett

Herrin- Wayne J. Garrett, 82, of Herrin died of lung disease at 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Herrin Hospital. Wayne is the son of Lester and Naomi Garrett, born in Early, Iowa, May 15, 1927. His brother, Bob, preceded him in death. In 1955, Wayne and his wife, Rita, purchased the Mendon Dispatch-Times where he was the publisher and editor until 1971, winning several awards in journalism from the Illinois Press Association. He also served as Mendon village president, school board member, president of the Lions Club and in various ministries of St. Edwards Parish. He has recently been active in the Democratic Party of Williamson County. Wayne cherished his neighbors and often enjoyed the leisure of walking the neighborhood dogs. He is survived by: Son- Joe Garrett & wife Bobette of Mokena Son- Hank Garrett & wife Yvonne of San Diego, CA Daughter- Mary Peters & husband Andy of Stafford, VA Daughter- Frances Settle & husband Larry of San Diego, CA Daughter- Ann Buzzard & husband George of Herrin Eight Grandchildren Six Great Grandchildren Brother- Donald Garrett & wife Sharon of Arroyo Grande, CA Brother- Phillip Garrett & wife Marilyn of Opelika, AL Brother- Roger Garrett & wife Marilyn of Atlanta, GA Step-mother, Grace Cave of Plainville Step Sister- Pauline Bringize & husband Warren of Plainville Step Sister- Maxine Scott of Florida Memorial services are being planned for later this summer. Memorial arrangements were planned at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
