Herrin- William Bill Calcaterra, 86, of Herrin, peacefully passed away at 11:42 AM, Friday, January 22, 2010 at Herrin Hospital.
Bill was born on February 4, 1923 in Herrin to Charles & Antoinette (Gualdoni) Calcaterra. He married the love of his life, Frances Calliss Hamilton on April 15, 1978 in Herrin. She survives of Herrin.
Bill proudly served 20 years in the US Army, retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII and was a member of the Special Forces Division (Green Beret) during two tours in Vietnam. Once stateside, he worked 20 years until his retirement from Allen Industries in Herrin.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin and at one time or another was a member of several clubs and organizations, including- the VFW, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Eagles and the Pigeon Inn. Over the years many people in Herrin have been blessed by Bills beautiful roses. Bill grew several different varieties of roses and happily shared them with everyone he met. He was loved and respected by many- he will be truly missed.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Herrin Hospital and Dr. Muniz and staff for the caring and kindness they showed Bill and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings- Rosetta, Charles, Robert, Joe and Lana and one grandson- Corey Hamilton.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Herrin VFW and American Legion Posts. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until time of service, Tuesday, January, 26, 2010 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The prayer service will begin at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the funeral home.
